Tolby Strahan- Director of Golf
Originally from Poplarville, MS, Tolby has been in the golf business for over 35 years. After graduating from Mississippi State University with a B.S. in Agronomy, Tolby went to work for Jack Nicklaus at Jack’s home taking care of his landscaping and tennis courts as well as some babysitting of the young Nicklaus’s. In 1979, Jack hired Tolby to be his superintendent at the under construction Bear’s Paw in Naples, FL. Tolby remained there until 1985 when Jack again asked him to be the superintendent at a course under construction which became the Country Club of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, LA. After 13 years at CCL, one more time Jack thought of Tolby when he was building the Grand Bear. Tolby was hired as the Superintendent at the Grand Bear in 1998. The Grand Bear opened in late 1999 with Tolby as the golf course superintendent. In 2000, Tolby was promoted to the position of Director of Golf, a title he continues to hold today. Tolby is married to Barbara and has two children Emily and Kyle.
Alan Sullivan- Golf Course Superintendent
Alan grew up in the town of Mize, MS. He attended Mississippi State University and graduated with a B.S. in Agronomy with an emphasis in Turf Management. After graduating in 1991, Alan worked as an assistant superintendent at Windance Country Club in Gulfport, MS until 1994. In 1994, Alan went to work for Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Perkinston campus as a professor of Turf Management. In 1998, Alan wanted to get back to work at a golf course and was hired by Tolby Strahan to be his assistant superintendent. When Tolby was promoted to Director of Golf in 2000, he made Alan his Golf Course Superintendent. Alan has been a member of the GCSAA for 20 years. He is married to Stephanie and has two sons, Mason and Nathan. Alan is active as a deacon at Campground Baptist Church and when he isn’t working his magic at the Grand Bear you can find him hunting, fishing, golfing or playing sports his two sons.
Ian Kahn- Head Golf Professional
Ian grew up the in the small town of Lake George in upstate New York. Ian is a 2003 graduate of the Golf Academy of America after studying meteorology at his beloved Florida State University and graduating from Adirondack Community College in Queensbury, NY. Upon graduating from the Golf Academy, Ian was hired on at the Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton, Florida, which is the home of the Champions Tour Allianz Championship, as an Assistant Golf Professional. Ian also met his wife Ana Carolina while employed at Broken Sound. In 2005, Ian moved to Lake Nona Country Club in Orlando as an Assistant Golf Professional. Lake Nona is world renowned for it’s quality and the high number of PGA and LPGA touring pros that reside there. He worked for top 100 teacher Gregor Jamieson. In 2006, Ian began working at the Grand Bear as the 2nd Assistant Golf Professional. He was promoted to the Head Professional position in January of 2014.
